trail mix is the superhero of snack foods, btw

If you ask me, trail mix is the king of snack foods because it is 1. easy to make, 2. highly customizable, 3. perfect for on-the-go, and 4. healthy. Let’s break those down:

trail mix

Easy to make – it requires literally no culinary skill or experience. If you can dump things in a bowl and stir it up you are good to go.
Highly customizable – there is an almost infinite amount of great combinations you can make in the trail mix realm. Mine includes pretzels, cranberries, cashews, sliced almonds, and dark chocolate chips, but you can add or substitute and nut, dried fruit, or snacky type food that you want. Need ideas? Try walnuts, pecans, pistachios, peanuts, or whole almonds. Instead of dried cranberries you could do blueberries, cherries, or raisins. Add in some sunflower or pumpkin seeds to mix it up. Brighten it up with M&M’s instead of chocolate chips, or if you want something more savory leave out the fruit and candy and use dried veggies like carrot chips or wasabi peas. See what I mean?

Perfect for on-the go – since you don’t have to refrigerate it and it doesn’t require any kind of dish or utensil to be eaten, you can take it anywhere! Stash a handful in a baggie or reusable container and keep some in your bag or car (leave out the chocolate if you plan to keep it in your car, though).
Healthy – nuts and seeds are full of protein and healthy fats, and everything in this recipe is high in fiber and iron and low in sugar (except the chocolate, but I throw that in because yolo). It’s perfect for a pre or post workout snack and a great substitute for the chips you might eat with your sandwich or the junk you might get from a vending machine.
Have I convinced you? Are you sold? Check out the recipe below and try it for yourself.
